Last week's plan was to go in and finish all my rigging (and layout if I could get help) However, I had four models left to do so I decided to do those first. Those were the Carola's Parotia, and the three main ladies. Other things I did (modeling-wise)
1) The pre-made bird rig: I didn't really like how the controls worked + it's designed for a realistic bird, so that was scrapped 2) My own custom skeleton + Advanced Skeleton build: That was horrible-- it gave me so many controls I didn't even know where to start to clean it up. I watched this video to see if it showed how to clean it up but it looks like it just got rid of all the circles automatically? Who knows In retrospect this was kind of dumb, but I did a wing skeleton + ncloth simulation test AFTER I built a full skeleton..which I really should have done in reverse because: observations
Simulation-wise, I put ncloth on the five remaining feathers and used the first and fifth to test out different dynamics + constraint points. None of them really worked, thus obervations. These are the tutorials I watched for the ncloth simulation-- bat wings but closer to what I needed since all the other tutorials had realistic feather layers (also both videos are essentially the same thing, just one actually explains it) I also did some research on dance scenes. I used this video as a point of reference and departed from there-- I found that the ones in the second half (Footloose, Saturday Night Fever, etc.) were good because they focused on individual choreography) I really wanted to replicate that sort of cheesy, exaggeration of the 70s and 80s so I searched primarily for disco battles and solos (since most scenes are large choreographed crowds, which isn't really what I'm going for) Some notes:
I also found that music dance videos were very helpful For next week!

The plan for this week was to finish modeling my birds, do new thumbnails, and hopefully start testing rigs Good news-- I managed to finish 5/6 of the remaining birds! Thumbnails also done, but there were some weird things going on with my base bird and first bird model, so I ended up having to clean those up and ran out of time for rig testing :( I did start looking at the potential of turning some of my geo feathers into ncloth since I only really need to rig the first three to be "fingers", and played a little with Xgen (which seems easy enough!) Plan for next week:
Since I needed to make all my models, this week was mainly figuring out how to approach modelling the bird both in order to translate the drawing style into 3D, as well as making it work with rig + feather. To do that, I started out by searching for different 3D bird movies to first help me decide on how I should stylize the feathers. The three that I narrowed it down to were Chicken Run, Angry Birds Movie, and Rio. I also searched up a whole bunch of videos on creating feathers in Maya (xgen), to see the flexibility of my options. The most helpful video I found happened to be a behind-the-scenes one from Rio, showing the actual bird rig!! Based on these, I decided I could base my wing modelling off the way Rio did it, which would allow me to fall back on a sort of clay-like Chicken Run (but less unsettling) style should the feathers not work out. With that figured out, I went in to make my base modelling assets, consisting of a 3-toed foot, 4-toed foot, extra toe (just in case), body, naked wing, a feather, separated beak parts, and a horrifying bird head. Crow's foot used for reference: Taking these, I felt my way through modelling the Ultimate Dancer (neck frill not included): Photo referenced: The individual wing I had exported to do a rig test on, but ended up not having the time to :(
That aside, now that I know what I'm doing, my plan for next week is to finish all my models and get started on rigging. To keep feedback on my story going I'll also try to do a revision on my thumbnails. Let's go!! |
