Since I needed to make all my models, this week was mainly figuring out how to approach modelling the bird both in order to translate the drawing style into 3D, as well as making it work with rig + feather. To do that, I started out by searching for different 3D bird movies to first help me decide on how I should stylize the feathers. The three that I narrowed it down to were Chicken Run, Angry Birds Movie, and Rio. I also searched up a whole bunch of videos on creating feathers in Maya (xgen), to see the flexibility of my options. The most helpful video I found happened to be a behind-the-scenes one from Rio, showing the actual bird rig!! Based on these, I decided I could base my wing modelling off the way Rio did it, which would allow me to fall back on a sort of clay-like Chicken Run (but less unsettling) style should the feathers not work out. With that figured out, I went in to make my base modelling assets, consisting of a 3-toed foot, 4-toed foot, extra toe (just in case), body, naked wing, a feather, separated beak parts, and a horrifying bird head. Crow's foot used for reference: Taking these, I felt my way through modelling the Ultimate Dancer (neck frill not included): Photo referenced: The individual wing I had exported to do a rig test on, but ended up not having the time to :(
That aside, now that I know what I'm doing, my plan for next week is to finish all my models and get started on rigging. To keep feedback on my story going I'll also try to do a revision on my thumbnails. Let's go!!
